Watch this 2 minute video to learn about the SunCache solar water heating system and see how easy it is to install!
SunCache is the lowest-cost residential-scale solar water heating (SWH) system certified in the U.S. SunCache is a renewable energy system designed for use in sunbelt locations. This exciting new technology is the result of a nine-year, $2 million R&D program supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
SunCache reduces water heating energy use by 30% to 70% depending on location, household size, and usage pattern. Households able to shift their usage to afternoon and evening hours will see the greatest savings. Originally designed for residential use, SunCache has even better economics in commercial applications!
Conventional solar water heating systems cost $7,000 to $9,000. With the exception of a few rebate programs, this is the check that you are writing! Including installation, SunCache costs about one-half as much as conventional solar water heating systems. Plastic materials reduce cost and weight, and the streamlined installation process takes as little as three hours. Federal, state and utility incentives can reduce the cost of installing a SunCache system by half, or more. Visit dsireusa.org to learn about incentives in your area.
SunCache comes with a 10 year warranty, matching the industry standard for collectors. But unlike other collectors, SunCache is delivered as an all-in-one system. This means you're entire solar water heating system is covered by a 10 year warranty! Other solar manufacturers offer only 5 year warrranties for storage tanks, and just 1 year of comprehensive coverage for pre-packaged systems.
How can we do this? SunCache is a passive system with the storage tank integrated into the collector. This means that it has no moving parts, uses no electricity, and doesn't need the pumps, sensors or controllers that active solar water heating systems require. This makes SunCache inherently much more reliable than active (pumped) solar water heating systems. A recent study by Sandia National Labs found that "about half of active systems can be expected to fail within a ten-year period," and that "passive SHW systems have much lower failure rates than active ones, probably due to their simple design that employs few mechanical parts."
SunCache has been OG-300 certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC), qualifying it for the 30% federal tax credit for residential solar systems. It has also been certified by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).
SunCache is only suitable for installation in Sunbelt and tropical climates, where freeze risks are modest. However, unlike all other collectors, the 10 year SunCache warrantyincludes freeze damage (within the approved installation territory). Based on NREL tests, SunCache can survive 14°F for 18 hours! This is is 6°F to 10°F colder than the freeze tolerance of other passive systems.
